Early Years and Family Background

Benzion Netanyahu (born Mileikowsky) was born on March 25, 1910, in Warsaw, partitioned Poland. His father, Nathan Mileikowsky, was a prominent rabbi and Zionist activist who played a pivotal role in the development of the Jewish national movement. Benzion's mother, Sarah Mileikowsky, was a devoted wife and mother.

Zionist Activism

Benzion inherited his father's Zionist passion. At a young age, he joined the Zionist youth organization Betar, where he became a fervent advocate for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. In 1933, he immigrated to Palestine with his family. He quickly became involved in the Zionist movement, working as a journalist and political activist.

Academic Career

In 1949, Benzion's son, Benjamin Netanyahu (later Prime Minister of Israel), was born in Tel Aviv. Benzion Netanyahu himself received a doctorate in Judaic studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He went on to teach at Dropsie College in Philadelphia and Cornell University, where he distinguished himself as a renowned historian and scholar of Jewish thought.

Legacy

Benzion Netanyahu's unwavering commitment to Zionism and Jewish scholarship left an enduring legacy. He was instrumental in shaping the ideology and policies of the Jewish national movement. His writings on Jewish history, theology, and politics continue to inspire and inform scholars and policymakers alike.

Benzion Netanyahu passed away in Jerusalem on January 12, 2012, at the age of 101. He is remembered as a towering figure of the Zionist movement and a distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to Jewish thought and culture.
